Grootkolk wilderness camp
in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

You will find Grootkolk wilderness camp tucked away in one of the most remote areas of the Kalahari in the middle of nowhere (or so it feels).

Nestling amidst red sand dunes with only the stars and silence for company, the camp is situated about 100km north of Nossob and 20km south of Union’s end, where the three countries South Africa, Botswana and Namibia meet.

This wonderfull wilderness camp is 6 hours drive from Twee Rivieren and 2,5 hours from Nossob. The camp is usually accessible by 2x4s and 4x4s only. Although corrugated, the gravel road can be negotiated with a normal sedan but it is not recommended

Next to an extraordinary wilderness experience, the camp offers 4 x 2 bed chalets with bedroom, ceiling fan, bathroom and kitchen on veranda (One unit is accessible for visitors with mobility impairment). They are made from sand bags and canvas.

Each chalet is equipped with cutlery, crockery, linen, towels, fridge and a braai (barbecue). There is Gas for hot water and cooking and Solar Panelling for lighting. The units are far enough away from each other to allow for complete silence and privacy, giving you the feeling of being on your own in the African wilderness.

All four of the units have a nice view of the water hole, which is about 70m away. Early evening there is a spotlight lighting the waterhole for about 2 hours. The surrounding area is stunning with quite a number of game.

The water at the camp is not suitable for human consumption, so make sure to take enough drinking water with you when visiting camp. Also there is no shop or petrol station, so it's important to fill up your car at Nossob before driving to Grootkolk and make sure you take enough food with you.

One of the many visitors to this exclusive wilderness camp had the following breathtaking experience;

"During one night, 2 male lions came to our hut. One urinated on the side of the sandbags, and then they proceeded to lick the braai grid for a while. Then they were roaring at a range of less than 5 metres from the cabin and I will never forget the sound. As the sun rose they lay down in front of our cabin and then proceeded to drink from the waterhole before walking off into the dunes.

My daughter slept through the whole thing! Thankfully I think, because she would have been quite scared. I have lived and worked in the Kruger park, and have visited most of the big 5 reserves in Africa south of the Zambezi. I have never experienced something as wonderful as this though, and recommend it to anyone who wants to get as close to a real Wilderness experience as possible."
