General info,...

Newly built after it was destroyed by fire, Lower Sabie is one of the most modern camps in the Kruger National Park. It is situated on the banks of the Sabie river, in the south east of the Park. Because of its fabulous game viewing, it is one of the most popular rest camps between the local South Africans and with its large lawns and huge shade trees, its particularly popular as a family destination.

From the large stilted deck around the restaurant and lounge bar area, you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view across the Sabie river, watching a large variety of animals coming to drink at the river. The Sabie river is one of the few perennial rivers that flow through the Kruger National Park. The diversity of wildlife that is attracted by the fresh water of the river is hard to equal anywhere in the Park.

The area is rich in Lion, Cheetah, Elephant, Hippo, Rhino, Buffalo and a very high density of Warthogs. The fauna at the Lower Sabie camp is of a riverine nature. Of the many large trees in the camp, the Sycamore Fig, the Yellow Fever tree and the Round-leafed Teak, are the most prominent. Other trees include the Leadwood and Sausage trees. Lower Sabie is situated amidst Knobthorn / Marula bushveld on basalt soil.

In Lower Sabie camp itself birding enthusiasts will find plenty of the more common species, such as Starlings, Sunbirds, Weavers, Woodpeckers and Hornbills. At night, before slumbering into sleep, they can listen the Square-tailed ( Mozambique ) and Fiery-necked Nightjars and the grunt of Verreaux’s (Giant) Eagle owl. The nearby Sunset Dam, about 1km from the entrance of Lower Sabie camp, is one of the finest venues in the Kruger National Park to observe aquatic species at close quarters.

Here birders will find Cormorants, Herons, Kingfishers and Storks in abundance, while the Marabou, Saddle-billed, Woolly-necked, Yellow-billed and Black Stork can at times be seen simultaneously. White-crowned Lapwing (Plover) appears to be resident on the river side of the tar road in the area of Sunset dam. In the Lower Sabie area Mlondozi dam is a good spot to view waterfowl including some of the rarer species in the park.

Kruger National Park lies in a summer rainfall area with occasional bursts of quick summer storms (which can be quite heavy) occurring later in the day, cooling the air and settling the dust. The summer months (October to April) are hot and often quite humid. Winters are warm and mild with cool evenings. Visitors going on night drives during the winter period may require warm clothing.

BY AIR:

The closest airport to the camp is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), which is situated between Nelspruit and White River, approximately 25km from Nelspruit and about 120km from Crocodile Bridge gate. There are daily scheduled flights between KMIA and OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, with less frequent flights from Cape Town and Durban International Airports respectively.

BY ROAD VIA CROCODILE BRIDGE GATE:

Take the N4 to Nelspruit and head through Nelspruit to Malelane and on to Komatipoort (about 110km). Then turn left onto the R571 just past Komatipoort and head on to the gate. If you are travelling from Johannesburg or Pretoria, allow between 5 to 6 hours for the trip to the Crocodile Bridge gate. Lower Sabie camp is about 34 km away from the gate, so allow about a further 2 hours for the drive to the camp. However, if you want to enjoy the game viewing possibilities give yourself more time!
