Marakele National Park directions, how to get there

The Marakele National Park Directions consists of two routes to the Park, which lies some 240 km north of Johannesburg, including maps. The entrance to the Park lies about 12 km north of the town of Thabazimbi, the GPS Coordinates are S 24º31.860' and E 027º29.896'.

The one route is via Pretoria, Bela Bela (Warmbath) and Thabazimbi. It is somewhat longer then the route via Brits, but the amount of traffic is a lot less.

Via Pretoria, Bela Bela and Thabazimbi, you take the M1 north (De Villiers Graaff motorway) or the N3 eastern bypass out of Johannesburg. At the Buccleuch interchange they become the N1 West and the N1 north (Ben Schoeman highway) to Pretoria. Follow the N1 north signs direction Pretoria.

When entering the first suburbs of Pretoria, continue following the N1 as it turns right at the Rooihuiskraal highway interchange. From there it continues as the Danie Joubert Freeway through the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.

Past Pretoria it continuous as the N1 highway. Follow it until you get the Bela Bela (Warmbath) off ramp sign. Here you turn left onto route 516, which takes you past Bela Bela.

You continue with this until it connects route 511. Here you turn right onto the 511. Follow it until it connects route 510. Turn right onto the 510 which will take you to Thabazimbi.

In Thabazimbi you will come to an intersection where the 510 turns left. Here go straight on with the D1485. This road will take you to the entrance of Marakele National Park, a distance of about 12 km from Thabazimbi.

The other route is via Brits and Thabazimbi. Although it is a little shorter, it has quite a lot of traffic which can slow you down.

The interactive map below shows this route as indicated by the blue line the two markers representing the departure and destination points. Use the zoom-in and zoom-out function to view details of any part of the route you like to explore.
