Satellite map of South Africa showing the Karoo region, the area within the yellow line

On the satellite image of South Africa above, the whole area within the yellow line is what we call Karoo. It can be subdivided in two ways. From an ecological point of view the large semi-desert area between the green and yellow lines is called the Nama Karoo region and the small area with a larger rainfall between the green line and the coast is called the Succulent or Green Karoo.

The other and more familiar subdivision is from a geographical point of view, whereby the large northern area between the yellow and green lines is known as the Great Karoo (“Groot Karoo”) and the smaller southern area as the Little Karoo ("Klein Karoo").
