Large varierty of West Coast National Park activities

There are plenty of West Coast National Park activities to be enjoyed by visitors in and around the Park. At the Lagoon, summer fun and water sports are top favourites on the activity list.



These include great game viewing in the Postberg region of the Park, a variety of water sports on the waters of the lagoon, fishing in peaceful and quiet areas, picnics in secluded spots, observing birdlife from secluded hides or stretching legs, a variety of hiking trails, stunning panoramas from a number of viewpoints or watch the Whales and their calves amuse themselves from Tsaarsbank viewpoint which overlooks the sea.

A limited section of the Lagoon has been set aside for board sailing, houseboats and sailboats. Angling and power boating are not permitted on this area. The list of water sport activities include sailing and sea kayaking, wakeboarding, water skiing, power boating, kite surfing and windsurfing. There also a number of local houseboats for hire. And all this within the calm ocean confines of the Lagoon.

The wildlife and game in the Park, which includes many antelope species, can be observed from the comfort of your own vehicle. Animals to look for are wildebeest, springbok, bontebok, kudu, Cape mountain zebra, gemsbok and Eland, to name a few. For visitors from abroad it may be useful to hire a car in Cape Town and explore this beautiful Park and the West Coast with its picturesque coastal villages beyond it on a self-drive basis. For food and refreshments there are the pleasant picnic sites and the widely renown Geelbek Restaurant.

Some of the more popular activities in the West Coast National Park are:

  • Restaurant and information centre at Geelbek.
  • Bird watching in Geelbek, Seeburg and Abrahamskraal bird hide.
  • Mountain bike and Cycling Route Trail.
  • Strandveld hiking trails starting from Geelbek Visitors Centre Picnic sites in Kraalbaai
        and Tsaarsbank.
  • Whale watching - August to November in Tsaarsbank.
  • Flower and Game viewing (self-drive) - August and September in Postberg.
  • Kite boarding, kayaking and other water sports can be done in Kraalbaai.
  • Bakoor Trail - short wildlife trail.
  • Cycling Route Trail - circular cycling and mountain bike routes.
  • Strandveld Trail - a 2 day hike through Strandveld to 16 mile beach.
  • Postberg Two Day Hiking Trails - exploring diverse scenery and 16 mile beach.
  • Steenbok One Day Trail (only during August and September).
